Carpentry Workshop in Slovenia Operates a Wood-Mizer Sawmill
Jože Moric, director of Moric Carpentry located in Slovenj Gradec has been woodworking since 1981. He went to carpentry school in Maribor, which had a three-year vocational program.
"I really liked it, and I think I made the right decision," shares Jože. "For me, wood brings a sense of warmth and style into an interior environment. Anyone who loves wood can choose the profession of a woodworker and will not go wrong!"
The beginnings of the woodworking business were very humble. "My workshop was only 4x9 meters!" Jože explains. "I used a moped to meet flooring and doors customers."
"My vision was to improve and upgrade my company gradually, and then with hard work, I would obtain higher profitability for individual timber products."
Jože realized that many people needed carpentry products, so he started expanding and hiring new employees. At that time, they were limited by production equipment, but they gradually upgraded.
Moric Carpentry's primary focus is interior woodwork: kitchens, bedrooms, playrooms, and offices. Additionally, they also offer interior design services to local companies.
"We design the products ourselves - kitchens from solid wood, chipboards, veneered boards, and kerrock panels. Of course, we also make general office equipment, staircases, doors, and other carpentry products, like furniture and windows."
Jože was able to get timber from local forest owners and forestry companies. Their process in the workshop begins with logs - the raw material - and continues with sawing, shaping, crosscutting, and planing, and ends with final wood processing.
The biggest challenge was procuring the proper machinery. "It's impossible to get everything you need overnight - it takes years," says Jože.
"I chose a Wood-Mizer sawmill because of their quality and optimal use of timber without excess waste. With this sawmill, we can consistently use the whole log, meaning we can make an entire solid product from one log."
Moric Carpentry operates the Wood-Mizer LT20B sawmill, combining the LT20 cutting head with the segmented bed. The control panel allows the blade height adjustment with the electronic SW Setworks device. It operates the powered forward and reverse head movement with variable speed. The LT20B sawmill is a popular low-budget solution for small-to-medium enterprises.
When the logs are sawn into planks, they are sorted and stacked for drying. When the wood is ready, it is cut and planed. Then, it passes through the milling process and other treatments such as shaping, CNC processing, and edge processing. Finally, the workpiece is coated with varnishing, wax, or an oil finish before it is assembled.
"Our clients appreciate competence, quality, and, of course, the warmth of their home after we help them achieve their desired interior furnishing. We take all measurements on-site and advise them on the products best suited for their living environment. Ultimately, our clients are delighted with the final product once it is in their home', says Jože.
"I would recommend working with solid wood because it brings a sense of warmth. It's a raw material you can obtain locally, and it can be used in such a way to bring satisfaction for generations to come".
