It's the dream of many a maker to create furniture with timber sourced a matter of yards from the workshop. While that might be achievable for people living in rural settings, when your workshop is in the heart of the East End of London, not exactly timber country, that sounds pretty nigh impossible. Thanks to the eminently portable Wood-Mizer LT20 sawmill the Eric Street Plane tree, felled some five hundred paces from my workshop and lying somewhat unloved for the last eighteen months, is now resting in a neat stack of many dozens of valuable planks.

For the last decade, Henry Brown from the North Yorkshire Moors has successfully diversified and made Grange Farm more profitable by adding holiday cottages and timber sales to his offer, making a rural hill farm viable for his growing family.

Paul Grainger is an engineer at heart. Whether it’s restoring motorcycles, repairing farm machinery or building timber-framed roofs, he can turn his hand to it. An eye for detail and a healthy dose of passion for carpentry has seen him build a diverse, busy business across North Yorkshire in England. Having three Wood-Mizer LT40 sawmills since starting the business has helped him go from selling waste wood on eBay to becoming an intrinsic part of a multi-million-pound restoration project at a luxury rural hotel.

Brampton Woodworks is an English carpentry workshop that specializes in building wooden footbridges and footpath signs. Recently, the number of orders from local authorities was increasing and they needed to purchase a new sawmill which would increase capacity and boost productivity. After thorough research they settled on the new Wood-Mizer LX450. “We found that the LX450 offered us larger capacity, we can put larger saw logs on,” says Robert Jeffrey, owner of Brampton Woodworks.

Specialising in the manufacture and distribution of fence posts, panels, pallets, battens and trellis throughout the UK, the team has developed a reputation for quality first and foremost, but also flexibility which Brian says sets them apart from other large mills. The latest addition to the team – a Wood-Mizer WB2000 wide band mill – is helping the company shelter itself from the volatility of the timber market while upping production at the same time.
