Incorporating the Best Features of Woodworking Machines in the Wood-Mizer MP280 Planer/Moulder

Its successor, the MP280 planer/moulder, is a functional and versatile woodworking tool with a design including several technical solutions borrowed from the bigger MP360 planer/moulder.  

Wood-Mizer has expanded its Woodworking machines with the announcement of the new MP280 planer/moulder. The MP280 answers the changing needs of the cabinet-making and carpentry industry. The MP280 is a compact tool that joins the best qualities of the famous and proven MP360 and MP260 planers/moulders. „The design of the newest machine relies on the MP260 unit while incorporating the best technical solutions known from the flagship MP360 planer/moulder. As a result, our engineers have built a precise, easy-to-use, and affordable machine for all the woodworkers concerned with more efficient ways of making finished wood products,” points out Woodworking Product Manager Radosław Adamkiewicz. 

The MP280 planer/moulder makes a perfect solution for medium and large woodworking companies that want to supply their customers with premium wood products, such as floorboards, sidings, panels, door and window frames, decorative elements, and more.  

Looking at the MP280, it is easy to notice the beveled legs, which underline its compact dimensions allowing it to fit into any corner around the workshop easily. Along with other Woodworking machines, the MP280 is manufactured from quality steel and cast iron and was created using the most technologically advanced tools and equipment. It has been built with steel double-casing for improved stability.      

The MP280 features two horizontal cutter heads – the top shaft with a length of 410 mm and a diameter of 88 mm, while the bottom one 300 mm x 72 mm, and two side cutter heads (one in a fixed position and one moveable), which mould the material with a maximum height of 100 mm. Increased efficiency of woodworking operations is possible with the four cutter heads that allow for 4-sided cutting in just one pass through the machine. Each cutter head is delivered with two straight HSS knives; however, they can also be fitted with moulding knives that match the customer’s needs. The feed mechanism has been incorporated from the bigger MP360 unit and has a variable speed of 3-15 m/min.

The cutting width and height can be adjusted manually with the crank handles, and precise measurements can be read on the counters, similar to the MP360 model. The height regulation mechanism has been installed in the upper part of the steel case allowing for a quick and easy adjustment.  

The MP280 planer/moulder has borrowed the best technical solutions applied across the entire range of Woodworking machines. The machine is also built on a solid cast iron worktable which guarantees increased stability and precision of work, as well as the lifetime durability of the construction. To make the operation of the MP280 as convenient as possible, the user feeds the material in and out of the machine on the tables that are 1,2 m long. For increased operator safety, unique protective steel curtains are installed over the infeed entrance to prevent material throwback. In addition, the MP280 has been equipped with an intuitive control panel with switches engaging all motors and the feed mechanism separately, allowing for lower energy consumption and noise emission. The 13,78 kW electric motors drive the cutter heads at 6000 rpm, ensuring the best possible finish.   

There are four sawdust exhaust ports – one with a diameter of 125 mm and three with 100 mm - and additional brushes installed inside the machine to drive out the waste material from around the cutter heads as efficiently as possible. The MP280 planer/moulder is compatible with the Wood-Mizer MES dust extraction systems, which have been designed to keep the workplace clean and tidy.  

With the MP280 planer/moulder it is possible to process the material with a maximum height of 100 mm; however, moulding the sides at that height requires reinstalling the standard 40 mm-high side cutter heads for the 100-mm high ones, which are available as optional equipment. The maximum cutting width for a 4-sided operation is 250 mm. It can be increased to 300 mm after uninstalling two side cutter heads, or 410 mm in a 1-sided process (with only the top horizontal cutter head engaged).
